Thanks to the aid of sponsors, patrons, restaurants and readers like you, Canadians’ favourite local foodservice operations have managed to not only stay open but to thrive. Now, we want to highlight stories from establishments across Canada that have truly felt the #TakeoutDay love.
Here are 10 restaurants which have succeeded thanks to your participation in enjoying takeout.
Argo Café (Vancouver, BC)
A family owned and operated hidden gem of Vancouver that has been open since 1954, Argo Café was revived after its brief shutdown by offering their comfort food made from scratch for takeout. This included take & make chef options like soups, pasta sauces, lasagnas, lamb shanks and chicken pot pies.
Soon after, they became active participants in Canada Takeout Day, engaging #TakeoutDay audiences with their daily specials, all reminiscent of a homecooked meal our families would make for us. Plus, they also have delicious diner-like options including burgers and shakes.
“We had a great day. Thank you so much for starting this national initiative. The increased business from this initiative helped us make rent this month” – After the first official #TakeoutDay (April 15th, 2020)

The Waupoos Pub Market & Eatery (Prince Edward County, ON)
A near-waterfront eatery in a county dependent on beach goers, cottagers and other summer forms of tourism, The Waupoos Pub Market & Eatery was eager to spread the word that they were still open to the live-in community of Prince Edward County.
Ready to serve everything from striploin to garlic mashed potatoes, frozen pub soups to buttermilk fried chicken clubs and deep-fried pickles, Waupoos registered their phone line with Canada Takeout and couldn’t believe the results after the first #TakeoutDay.
“WOW!!! What a night in Waupoos!! Countless phone calls and messages (sorry if we missed you) for takeout last night! We sold out!!!! It’s a reminder of how a small community like ours can come together, support one another and social distance respectfully”

Autostrada Osteria (Vancouver, BC)
On March 16th, Autostrada Osteria closed the dining room where they’d always served their best Italian cuisine and wine selection.
“4 Weeks ago, like all our restaurant friends, we closed our doors and said goodbye to all of our employees. Ownership stayed on and worked around the clock to pivot into a new-to-us model of business,” they told Canada Takeout via email.
Two days later, they announced on social media that takeout would be available each night. Come April, they became part of the #TakeoutDay initiative, contributing to their ability to return to their previous norm.
“Last week, because of your support, we hired back 8 members of our kitchen team.”
On May 28th, Autostrada will be opening their dining room doors again while continuing to offer both takeout and delivery.

Eva’s Original Chimneys is a family-run establishment that was founded in Toronto by her grandson Justin and his wife Kristin. The matriarch of the family worked closely with the two to develop the dough recipe that is served at Eva’s today.
In addition to remaining open at its Bloor Street spot, the sweet-tooth inspired restaurant has recently reopened its Port Credit location thanks to its takeout success.
“Thank you so much for this movement – we are working so hard to stay open and every bit helps!”

Swiss Chalet (Multiple Locations, Canada)
While being a recognizable chain, there are several franchises of Swiss Chalet throughout Canada that have experienced success solely from takeout and delivery alone.
Not a company to think solely of itself, the establishment has aided in raising awareness for restaurants big and small across the Great White North.
“#TakeoutDay is helping raise awareness to local businesses, restaurant owners, franchisees, and small business owners who need our help and support during these times. On behalf of our local franchisees and small business owners, thank you!”

Cora Breakfast and Lunch (Langley, BC + Multiple Locations)
As a consistently resilient business, Cora’s existence stemmed from a failed marriage that grew into a journey of survival and success with a small restaurant hosting only 29 seats.
Since then, the Canadian institution has grown to multiple locations across the country. Although the dine-in experience is currently not available, Cora continues to expand on its success through takeout and delivery, offering unique breakfast and brunch options.
“#TakeoutDay has helped our business as not only on Wednesdays have our takeout sales increased, but it has brought awareness to the community that restaurants are open and ready for your orders. It has been a great initiative, with great community support!”
