We’re on the go again and many of us are popping into a convenience store for a snack or meal. Did you know there are a few ways to make sure your choices are heathier ones? Here are 5 tips from our Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist for heathier picks in a convenience food store.

1. Scope Out Your Options

When looking for snacks or a meal, take a walk around the store and see what’s available. People are more health conscious and convenience stores are trying to offer more nutritious options to help you eat well. Don’t choose impulsively. Consider better for you options most of the time for better health.

3. Explore Nuts And Seeds

Nuts and seeds are a tasty way to eat more healthy nutrients such as fibre, protein and unsaturated fat. Choose nuts that are raw or dry roasted (without oil) and free of added salt and sugar. Nuts mixed with dried fruit are a tasty snack.

4. Curb Your Hunger With Nutrient Dense Meal Options

Canned beans are tasty and nutritious and can be used in so many different ways! This chili meal for example contains fibre and protein. You can enjoy chili from the can or wrapped in a burrito or complemented with a salad or fresh vegetables for a complete meal.

5. Choose Your Beverages Wisely

Staying well hydrated is important to your health and the best way to satisfy your thirst is with water! Keep water nearby when you’re out and about. Enjoy other fluids such as skim milk, fortified soy beverages, 100% vegetable or fruit juices to help you meet your fluid needs.
